Don’t Be a Big Baby

I went to the doctor and it looks like la bambina is doing great. Her heartbeat is strong. She’s very active in there (even when I don’t feel her moving) and her head is in the right position (is that even something they check for this early?) There’s just one snag– la bambina is big. Not really BIG. She was only a pound, but at her stage in development she ought to be closer to 11 oz.  What’s the harm in a few ounces, you say? Well I’ll tell you.

Helllllooooooo C-Section!

That’s right. If la bambina continues to grow at her current rate, she’ll be too big for me to give birth in-ahem-the traditional way. So the doctor has told me to cut out sugar and refined carbohydrates. We’re hoping that by filling my diet with lean protein and veggies la bambina won’t gain any more poundage than  our genetics already have in store for her.  In any case, the doctor told me that I needed to “mentally prepare myself for the idea of a c-section.”

I am NOT mentally prepared for C-Section. Don’t get me wrong. I don’t look forward to traditional labor and delivery. I’m not psyched about the dilation, the pushing or. . .well, any of it.  That said, all that is preferable to minor surgery–which is what a C-Section is.  I particularly dread the recovery time after a C-Section. The inability to sit, stand, bend or twist without pain.  I hate to think about the kind of burden that’s going to put on my hubby in the early days after we bring la bambina home. That’s to say NOTHING about how my stomach muscles will never look the same again after a C-Section.  I don’t have the personal trainers, dietitians, and plastic surgeons that allowed Britney Spears to have two C-Sections and–a mere two years later–to dance and sing (badly) in fishnets and a bikini on the VMAs. Not that I’d be doing that under any circumstances anyway, but I digress.

So I’m eating whole wheat (which tastes like paste) and TONS of veggies–which I should be doing a lot more anyway–and trying not to think about the baby that’s growing inside of me at a rate only seen in science fiction.

Nothing minor about c-sections. That’s major abdominal surgery. The whole “big baby” thing is bull. Lots of moms have unnecesareans based on ultrasounds which end up being inaccurate.

I have to say your blog is hilarious. I am 21 weeks pregnant with my second, 1st is a boy he’s 6. I went for my ultrasound and I too have a modest child, we are almost sure though from what we did see that its a girl. I just think its hysterical that everything you have going on is EXACTLY the same as me. It has to be a girl thing. My husband will eat ALL my malomars, and yeah wanting to cave his head in is not close to what i wanted to do. Just wanted to say great blog, its nice to know im not alone. And p.s. i had a c-section with my first and am going to have another, its really not as bad as people make it out. Good luck!!!

Thanks Dina (particularly for the words about the c-section. I’m trying not to worry too much about it)! It’s also good to know that someone else out there is going through something similar! Pregnancy is a crazy, crazy thing. 🙂

Good luck with your upcoming ultrasound– may your baby be cooperative!
